As the coolest, most fun-watching, and avant garde carpet of them all, the Met Ball is the rebel cousin of red carpets. The one the rest gawk at in admiration and pray for a bit of its coolness to rub off on them.
However, fascination doesn’t come without a risk of its own. For those who dare walk this carpet, there is a fine line between a perfect revolutionary and fashionable look, and a what-where-you-thinking, painfully cringing apparition. Since an image can speak louder than words, let’s stop talking and start showing!
The Succesful Risk-takers
Here are those who delivered style, progress, and excitement all wrapped in one, without eroding their own image.
Lily Aldridge in Ralph Lauren offered us a masterclass on accessorizing. This look could have fallen short for the Met Ball, had it not been for the red Balenciaga boots and the pink mesh, daintily wrapped around her face.
Rita Ora in custom made Marchesa was a stunner. If it was too much, it sure didn’t feel like it! Even her hair, felt right!
Making an exemplary homage to Comme des Garçons, Tracee Ellis Ross showed everyone how to hit the carpet in a unique yet exquisite look. Oh yes it is rare, but elegant and appropriate, as well!
Bella, Bella, Bella. Her skintight look by Alexander Wang, revealed so much, while concealing almost her entire body. An illusion made to impress!
And whilst talking about illusions, we can’t forget, Amy Fine- Collins look. A cross between a tuxedo and a gown, this Thom Browne creation fits right into this particular crowd, without blending too much for it to pass unnoticed.
Lena Dunham was a striking and improved version of herself enveloped in a Vivienne Weston ball gown. She gave us punk with sophistication.
Also under this category, Kendall Jenner gave us a lot to talk about. Not only did she make quite an entrance, but an even more stirring exit in her La Perla gown (can you even call it a gown?)
The Elegance Squad
It feels like ages since we last saw Cara Delevingne walking, so it was amazing to see her take this particular carpet and make it her personal runway. Hypnotized by her shimmering Chanel power suit, I couldn’t stop staring. Everything about her screamed confidence and style.
Kate Hudson was a snow queen in this Stella McCartney dress. She ruled the carpet with an ice baton, leaving us all with the right kind of chills.
Lily Rose Depp was another Chanel vision.
And we can’t forget this other Chanel look. Hailey Baldwin kept it ethereal, chic and stylish!
On a totally different note, Riley Keough brought her combat spirit to the carpet. Her Louis Vuitton gown was riotous and powerful.
The What-were-you-thinking-of’s
I usually restrain myself from including anything that’s not beautiful in my blog, but I feel it would be irresponsible not to condemn the following fashion crimes.
Julie Macklowe.
Helen Lasichanh in Comme des Garçons (she could really learn something from Tracey!)
Anna Cleveland in Comme des Garçons (ditto!)
Céline Dion in Versace. It is just WRONG!
Grace Hartzel (What a horrible way of profaning Dior!)
Nicki Minaj in H&M.
Michele Lamy.
